Kia GT4 Stinger Detroit Auto Show Debut

Kia doesn’t currently offer a rear-drive performance car, but after seeing the Kia GT4 Stinger Detroit Auto Show debut, we have a feeling that could soon change. The conceptual design for the Stinger was recently teased, but now that it has officially been unveiled, we have all of the juicy details of the Stinger, which could be a glimpse at the future of Kia models.

Under the hood the Kia GT4 Stinger concept packs an insanely powerful turbo four-banger which is capable of producing 315 horsepower. It sends all of its power to the 20-inch rear wheels which come equipped with 15-inch Brembo calipers. According to Tom Kearns, chief designer at Kia Design Center America, the four-cylinder helps add to the appeal of the Stinger concept.

“It’s an authentic 2+2 sports car that can turn heads as a daily driver while also being right at home on the track,” Kearns said. “It’s about purity, simplicity and timelessness.”

Weight reduction is one of the main goals of the Stinger which gives the interior a simplistic look that still reflects the extremely sporty exterior. On the inside, the carpeting and stereo are non-existent. Rather than door handles, the Stinger uses fabric straps for door pulls. As you can imagine, the seats and steering wheel are race car-inspired.

Kia has said they have no plans to put the Kia GT4 Stinger into production, but there have been instances—such as with the Soul—where Kia concept models have been pushed into production. If we had to guess, we would assume that a performance-driven rear-drive coupe will eventually find its way into the Kia lineup.

If a production model were to be released, it would likely share a lot of parts with the Genesis sedan and coupe—the rear-wheel performance car from Hyundai, Kia’s sister company. The platform and 274-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder of the Genesis would provide a great starting point for Kia. The engine would probably need some retuning, but it’s better than starting from scratch.

As we said, this is all just speculation. Time will tell whether or not the potential production model is released, and how much influence the GT4 Stinger will have on that model. We just hope that something happens as the GT4 Stinger Detroit Auto Show debut was undoubtedly one of the most exciting new car reveals at the show.
